About APBPC:
Agriculture is the single largest producing sector of the economy since it comprises about 20% of the country's GDP and employs around 63% of the total labor force. The performance of this sector has an overwhelming impact on major macroeconomic objectives like employment generation, poverty alleviation, human recourses development, food security & export diversification.
Focusing on export diversification, the government has been trying to boost up the export potentials of different agricultural & horticultural products. Consequently, with a view to promoting the Agro products of the country, Ministry of Commerce has formed the Council on June 16, 2011 titled “Agro Products Business Promotion Council (APBPC)” in partnership with the public and private sector.
Objectives of the Council:
To promote the export of agricultural and horticultural products, help industry acquire the right technology, develop export-marketing skills, impart training and workshops/seminars to develop, promote the value added products in the agro and horticulture sector; to focus on identification of production and export related problems and preparation of policy recommendations for the Government, create awareness on different compliance standards and so on.
The economy of Bangladesh is predominantly agricultural. Since the inception of Bangladesh, the country has achieved an incredible growth in food production and reached self-sufficiency, thanks to the pragmatic steps of the present government and hard work of the farmers. About 80 percent of the total population lives in rural areas, and 62 percent of them are directly, and others are indirectly engaged in a wide range of agricultural activities. The agriculture sector contributes around 20 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and generates employment for 63 percent of the total labor force.
Rice, Jute, Sugarcane, Potato, Pulses, Wheat, Tea, Tobacco, Oilseed, Spices and Fruit are the principal crops. A few of the products of this sector are currently exported to different countries with immense global competition. The growth and diversification of Agro products largely depends on the policy support, public-private joint initiative for institutional and financial support, availability of technical and business information, innovation and sustainable development of technology and related products, capacity development of industries, research and development facilities and removal of other barriers relating to the agricultural sector.
Soil conditions, topography and climate makes the area ideal for large scale and sustainable production of cereals, fruits and vegetables. Vegetables like potato, cauliflower, tomato, white gourd, bean, spinach, pea and baby corn are being produced in the region in larger quantities side by side with broccoli, carrot, celery, capsicum and strawberry. Most of these have huge earning prospects through exports. Potato flakes also have great international demand and its production technology is relatively simple and labour intensive. Such an industry should have great prospects in Bangladesh.
